The Merit ML14KP1 is from Lennox's entry line, and the Elite EL16KP1 sits a step above. Every unit here is single-stage, so it runs at full output whenever it's on. One ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling, so a 3.5 ton unit and a 42,000 BTU unit are the same size. Size it from a Manual J load calculation, and treat your old unit's size as a starting point only.
A heat pump cools in summer and heats in winter. Pair it with a Lennox air handler, or with a gas furnace and coil for a dual-fuel setup.
